Slow or Fast Paced Working Environment

Which do you prefer? I actually prefer a mix of both...Seems like when age is catching up and i have a strong desire to nua, i like things to move a little slower.
I am slightly fortunate to work in an environment whereby things can go really quickly at times and there are also instances whereby things arent even moving! Those are the hair grabbing situation when I really cannot "tahan".
I am currently at the lull period and I glad to have a short break. Previously, life on the vessel was tiring and never ending. Now that i'm supposedly in a resort like environment, things have changed for the better! It's also awesome due to the fact that i am close to home. Hence, time to time i can escape to back home to have a break or 2. Thumbs up and pat on my back!
So, do you guys like the adrenaline rush or the slow and steady pace of life??

No excuses for not blogging!

It's a pity that i havent been religiously blogging. My blog is something that i hold dearly too. Strange that i look up my blog from time to time and yet i havent been contributing to it. While i have some time available in Batam, i decided to do a quick update on my recent life.

Currently....
I have been travelling within Asia pacific region frequently due to work. I am enjoying every single bits of it even though i have to work doubly hard. When i meant working hard, this means working 12 hours non-stop. Not that 12 hours is a very exhausting work period but the extended period of continuously working 12 hours. Thinking about it, i left Netherlands around 26th Sept, so this means that i have been travelling for approximately 3 months. It's not a bad thing to be shifting from one place to another but it can be tiring at times. I am glad to have Singapore as my "base" to rest and relax. Ironically, Singapore isn't depicted to be a relaxed city. However, home is where is heart lies..Isn't it?

Future...
Next week will mark the last week of my travelling/working overseas stint and embarking onto my year end vacation! Woohoo! I am eager about this trip yet so unprepared. The many hours spent on work has depleted my time to train for this hike. I am pretty apprehensive about this trip. Hopefully i will be able to survive the hike. Heading back to Africa will be an interesting experience considering that i have been to south africa recently. I hope that Tanzania will be vastly different and i strong believe so. After the long 3 week holiday, it will be back to work again and beginning of a new year.
I gonna start making my list of new year's resolution....

Will update soon about my trip..time to work and apology for the abrupt end.

Away from home made me realised this

I have been away from home for a certain period of time. During this period made me realised a few things...

1.You are suddenly so independent and capable of doing things all alone.
2.You take much a longer time to get basic things done due to being in a unfamiliar environment.
3.You have more "me time" because all your our distractions are gone.
4. You get to know yourself better and do not get influence by peer pressure that easily.
5. You take a longer time to trust someone.
6. You are much more sensitive when someone is mentioning something about your country.

It's been a year

It's been a year plus since I decided to relocate myself to the Netherlands. Realised that i haven't been blogging for awhile and had a sudden spur to do so. I was partly inspired by carrotcake's blog. He started blogging and decided to blog about his travel trips. We have the similar hobbies, enjoy running, loves outdoor activities and love travelling.

So some of you must be wondering whether I made the right decisions to move to Holland. I would proudly say without hesitating that YES i have made the right decision. Truthfully, there are such moments whereby i complained and rant about Holland, however nonetheless, I enjoyed this experience very much. One of the most common questions that people will ask me, "How long are you going to stay in the Netherlands?" Well, very often i provide them a very diplomatic answer, is that until i am out of job. Or perhaps a very cheeky remark, that when i have had enough fun. But come on, for me the fun never ever ends. A very honest and brutal answer is that eventually i have to return, because my dearest partner is waiting for me back home.

Refreshing FB pages and seeing that my friends around me are tying the knot and being proposed to,  do make me wonder time and time again what will actually happen to me if I have chosen to remain back at home. Will I follow what the many Sgreans do? Ballot for a HDB flat, change job for a better pay jump, getting married, saving up for the massive banquet. Goodness, this is getting too overwhelming for me. I still long for freedom.

And this jumps back to the point to explain why I am enjoying my life here. Yes, there are countless of disadvantages. I miss my friends and family dearly. On top of it, I am miles away from my partner and suffer through the agony of a long distance relationship. Missing the hawker food and warm sunny island, in turn shivering in the cold winds everyday and eating cold sandwiches. However, being here, i enjoy heading to work everyday. I gain confidence day after day when interacting with seniors and managers. The working environment is youthful and vibrant. I have a team of international minded colleagues working along with me. Getting twice the number of annual leave, having a work life balance. These are the intangibles that i can never get back home. Some of you may think that I am here for big bucks but I do wish to clarify that if i had decided to stay at home, i would have most probably be able to get the same range of salary. I am here basically for the experience and I am glad to say that the whole experience is fulfilling and enriching.

Back here, i get to enjoy my life, travel more regularly and indulge in activities that i like. Cycle to work, staying near the beach, cherishing the sun shine, smelling the sweet flowers along the road side, drinking cheap beer. Little things like these sums up the many happiness i get everyday.

I made a promise to return back home to my partner once my project is over. But will I eventually have the guts to do that? Will I have the energy to survive back home in the rat race? I am afraid and skeptical of my capabilities....

Welcoming 2014

As always, when the new year begins I will do some self reflection and think about making a new year’s resolution. Let’s refer back to what resolutions that I have committed myself to.

1. Run a marathon (Achievable but nope, I didn’t. The longest run race event I did this year was 16km only. So ashamed of myself. I did 2 run events this year though. 10km and 16km)
2. Climb a mountain (Sadly, not a famous mountain on my name this year. I visited national parks in Sheffield too and did some light trekking in the Netherlands)
3. Learn something new (I would say dare say baking! Have been baking a lot with my house mate. 1 tick off my resolution list)
4. Improve my tennis (I did not bring my tennis racquet and shoes along to the Netherlands with me. So I guess my tennis skills dropped a lot)
5. Practise calligraphy more regularly (I seriously untouched my calligraphy pen for one year. Need to bring my ink bottle and paper to practice more!)
6. Be more regimental about my skincare regime (Got myself more skin care stuff…will try to be more hardworking about it and do my due diligence.)

I believe year 2014 will be a lot of travelling involved as well. So I shall have to consider that when making my list of new year resolution. For the year of 2014, more new experiences continues to await and I am excited about it!

1. Run at least a half marathon
2. Climb a mountain
3. Improve a skill. Any form of skill is possible. Tennis, baking, cooking…
4. Be regimental in my skincare
5. Maintain constant communication with my friends
6. Newly added! Eat healthy and hopefully reduce some weight. Drink less beer, indulge in healthy snacking habits, consume more fruits. Comparing myself to others (dutch in this case), I am seriously eating too unhealthily. I see myself experiencing an increase in weight as well and this is unacceptable!

Back to the Netherlands

Anyway, from the previous post you guys would have known that I have moved to the Netherlands again. I need to put across this that the whole move back to the Netherlands is just pure coincidence. Seems like I have alot of affinity with this country? Previously, I have spent 6 months in Eindhoven and who would have think that 3 years later I am back for more.
This time I have no idea how long will I be staying here and i I do not intend to put any fixed duration to it. For those who haven't heard any updates from me, I am going to list down some keys facts so that I do not have to repeat and nag when you ask the usual how-have-you-been-and-what-are-you-doing question.
1) i am still working as an engineer and in the same industry
2) my work scope changed a little, but still pretty much similar
3) i am in Europe ,Holland now and please please come visit me if you can. To be more specific, i am living in the Hague right now.
4) do i intend to get married? i guess marriage isn't in the pipeline in the near future since i am so far away.
5) how did i get the job here? i applied for the singapore office but my resume got sent over to the netherlands instead.
6) am i getting an expat pay? no, i am not. I am getting the same pay and benefits as the locals.
7) when is the good time to visit me? anytime! I have gotten a big apartment and it's possible to host friends as well.

Meanwhile, I will keep updating whenever possible!

Happy Birthday to Me!

It has really been a while since I have posted on this blogger. Since there has been a great change in the year 2013, I shall update as much as possible.
It is a really belated post but nevertheless Happy Birthday to Myself. Turning 26year just daunt upon me that I have crossed the 25 mark. I am no long sweet 20 and turning sour infact. Heh! I have 4 more years before I hit the big 30. I am really getting a little apprehensive as I have not achieved any significant milestones before hitting 30. Days ago, I asked my colleague how she felt when she turned 30 and I vividly remember the comment she gave. She said this to my chirply, " At 30, I am married, obtained a master's degree, have a young daughter. I have achieved what I am supposed to achieved!" Then I was thinking to myself that I have NOT achieve any of this, gosh!
Going on further to explain more about this year's birthday, it came in at a wrong period of time. It coincidence with the 2nd day of Chinese New Year and everyone will be busy celebrating, not to mention my bf would not be in Singapore as well. So I am actually well prepared for no forms of celebrations on my birthday. Gotten over it! My birthday also marks yet another significant change in my life whereby I will be moving to the Netherlands. Yes, yet again.
Well, when opportunity knocks on you, you either take it or pass it. I will talk more about my move to the Netherlands in the later post. More importantly, since it is my birthday and the new year, I shall make some new year's resolution like what I do every year.

1. Run a marathon
2. Climb a mountain
3. Learn something new
4. Improve my tennis
5. Practise calligraphy more regularly
6. Be more regimental about my skincare regime

Lastly, happy birthday to myself! And by the time that you are done with this post, I have most probably landed at Holland. Good luck to myself as well!

Changing Attitudes

These few weeks have been a rather emotional one for me. I thought I was very good at keeping my coolness but I was wrong. It seemed like I had a lot of pent up frustrations and grievances that I am trying so hard to hide and mask it all.

My boss was asking me how things are liked and before that I had told myself to be strong and phrase my sentences correctly and carefully. However, I go so caught up with pouring out my displeasure at work such that I used wrong words. I hate myself for getting so overwhelmed so easily. Words when are not used carefully can be as sharp as a knife!

I see success as being happy at work and this means getting satisfaction and enjoying the work I do. However, this doesn’t seem to be the case. Therefore, I engage in lots of mini activities after work in hoping to mitigate my unhappiness in work. This helped a lot and I am pretty glad that those small activities make me a slightly happier person. However, happier isn’t enough! And then the whole vicious cycle of me being unhappy starts all over and over again.

Yesterday, the moody me just resurfaced again. I told myself that I am not going to wallow in self pity and perhaps I just need to correct this stupid habit of bringing in unhappiness to myself. I shall (hopefully) start a day with a smile. Plan my activities and list down the task I hope to achieve for the day. The usual saying always goes like this, “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail”. Changing attitude is probably all I will ever need. “if I plan to be happy, I will be happy” Comparing myself to many other people other there, i am grateful for what i have now!

I promise to use my time to do productive work and not be unhappy. Changing the frown to a smile isn’t that all difficult right?

Sidenotes:

Received an e-mail today and got so delighted! It has been awhile since I am so excited about something.

Fickle Minded Me

After liking orange for sometime and as age changes up. Preference changes as well...I am proud to announce that my fav colour is turquoise! Don't ask me why but it seems that my colour preference has shifted to the greenish-blue section or the blueish green where some people may call it.

Life goes on...
Been busy with art work, volunteer work, part time work and everything else except my full time work. Heh, what an irony. Seems like the sprinkles in my life is sweeter than the cake itself.
I have an 18km run coming up and i haven't been training for it. Well, i am sure i will be able to walk it off!

Ever positive and hoping for a BIG change ahead!

Unbalanced

Bonus of working

When work sucks, you money earned to make it up. When pay sucks, you use work fulfillment to make it up. When work and pay suck.. Time to move on a change a job. There's no bonus working when no bonus is given..
Side note: seems like I am getting weird presents for my birthday this year. Am I turning weirder or what? Well.. Different groups of people have skewed impressions of me I guess? Hehe!
Side side note: going to pick up a new hobby.. Hopefully, I will be able to seek inner peace within. Blogging through my phone instead of typing through the keyboard is weird. I don't really know how to explain it. But it's just not that therapeutic already...

Running

Haven't been running much this week as I am busy with my volunteer work. I have signed up for a trail run but my friend deserted me for an overseas trip. Guess I gonna run alone then!

Side notes: I am thinking of picking up a new hobby. Should I? I am so fickle minded!

Trekking Once More

Hello Blogger,

It's been a while since i've updated my dusty blog. Time for pictures and some interesting captions peppered on them. This time, i'm going to blog about my latest trekking trip, Mount Kinabalu! Yay! Mt Kk has always been a mount that i've wanted to scale for the longest time ever. I'm glad to manage to find a friend to climb with me and fulfil my long held wish. One more mountain added to my trekking list and I hope more will be added soon. If possible, can someone hire me to bring people to go trekking around the world? I'm so sick of being desk bounded.

First nice checkpoint with a small puny waterfall

The tongkat is always my best friend

Small lunches, good for dieting!

Steps, steps and more steps

You get to see a lil mist

Base camp! Via ferrata briefing for the next day

The peak! Reached the summit at an unearthly hour of 5.10am.

Summit view and waiting for sunrise...

K...Finally the sky became brighter

You see the sun now...

One of the many peaks around..
Time for via ferrata! See the clouds!

I'm going down now...

Sick Running

I realised that i haven't been blogging for quite awhile and it isn't fair that i reguarly check my friend's blog but not update mine as well.
I guess when all the monotony in life just sinks in, it's pretty pointless to update the little bits of exciting elements during your daily life. Well, let me recall those interesting or significant bits.
Got pretty sickly over the week, one disease just comes one after another. And for no apparent reason somemore! Caught gastric flu which is very absurd! I eat regularly or even excessively, no stress or whatsoever, never skip breakfast cos i get very hungry whenever I wake up. How did I even get gastric flu?! Followed on by a very terrible sore throat which lead to me losing my voice. Sounded really hoarse. Cough cough cough, took loads of cough syrup because I need to recover quickly for my marathon! Currenly, i'm down with a bad flu and attacked by crap loads of mucus and phlegm. Yucky I know. I just cleared a box of tissue paper.
Skip the all sickly bits and I'd like to shout out that I've completed a full marathon! Yes, you've heard me right, it's a 42km run. I was pretty appehensive about the whole race as I've never ever ran for such a far distance before. On top of that, i wasn't feeling the best as my body system was down. I was really worried that my body won't allow me to complete the race. I've been running more regularly ever since i signed up for this marathon on impluse. I was contemplating for the longest time ever whether to do a full or a half. Then i just decided to whack it lah! Though i jogged more regularly but the longest distance that I've clocked during my training was only 15km. Yet I had the nerve to go for my full marathon! Madness! On top of that, before entering the race venue, traffic was really bad and I was stuck in the jam for an hour or so. I got off the car and had to walk to the starting point. To my horrow, the starting point was like 3km away from where I got off. Mind you I had 42km to complete and making me walk for 3km in is detrimental! I was already like 1hour late from the flag off time and had many thoughts of giving up the race. However, upon reaching the starting point I just knew that I have got to run, quickly so I could catch up with the rest and complete the race within the given time frame.
Now I'm proud to announce that I've completed my first full marathon at a timing of 5hr43min! I thought that it was a feat for me considering that I trained a little only. I guess, the thought of ending the whole run asap because i needed my sleep was a good motivation as well. So now...till my next run again! One of my list of resolutions for the year!

"Towards greater heights- NYR 2011"

1) complete a 42km marathon
2) climb at least 1 mountain
3) learn tennis
4) go for course/ take a test
5) clean up my table and cupboard reguarly
6) travel a new country

Bored at work

As above. Totally unproductive and unfulfilling day...I need a break soon else i'll break down in a mental state. Well..I hope to seek some peace in reading.
